Women are under-represented among overall high growth businesses

Out of the nearly 15,000 high-growth private businesses identified in the study across 12 APAC markets – Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam – the statistics show that no more than 5.7% are founded, co-founded, led or managed by women. That represents 848 companies.

Funds raised by the Women-Powered, High-Growth businesses

The 848 women-powered, high-growth businesses in APAC collectively raised a total of USD 37bn in funding up until April 2022. USD 12bn was raised in 2021 alone, accounting for 32% of aggregate fundraising by these companies since incorporation. The sectors with the highest proportion of women-powered businesses in the high-growth segment were Technology at 22%, Consumer Goods & Retail at 19% and Healthcare at 16%, respectively.

Government policy is a catalyst

Our findings further highlight the importance of supportive government policies in advancing the efforts of women to grow and sustain their entrepreneurial ambitions and achievements. Regional efforts are emerging as markets push the initiative forward in driving accessibility, opportunity and independence among women in the start-up ecosystem in APAC.

Building purpose-driven businesses attracts investment flows

With investors looking for a combination of purpose and profit, many of the report’s featured women-powered businesses, with their long-term sustainable focus and positive impact, will become more attractive when seeking future investments in their enterprises. Several of our top 100 women-powered, high-growth businesses have developed purpose-led and mission driven businesses, which have propelled their successes in securing investment flows into their enterprises.

Network building to strengthen presence in the investor landscape

Interviewees from the top 100 women-powered, high-growth businesses ranking identified the need for support through inclusive networks, mentoring and closer collaboration amongst women to build stronger outreach communities.

Network building is often cited as a critical factor for scaling a business, yet at the same time, is an elusive skill to master. Several of the women business owners in the report highlighted the need for proactive and extensive network building, especially in the early days of founding a company.
